Who can service and repair a Handicare stairlift?
There are three routes: Handicare itself, the dealer or accredited partner that fitted the lift, or an independent engineer. Handicare’s own guarantee and maintenance terms say work on the lift or its parts “may only be performed by dealers (and their employees) who have been certified by Handicare”, using “original spare parts that have been approved by Handicare”. Where other parts are used, the page says the Handicare warranty and the CE mark “will become invalid with immediate effect”.
The same page recommends a service by “a Handicare approved engineer at least once a year”, and says partners may offer extended cover “if the stairlift has received regular services”. So the servicing history matters, whoever does it.

Why is my Handicare stairlift not working? Safe checks first
None of these needs a tool or a cover taken off.
1. Mains and key switch
Confirm the lift is switched on at the mains. It is the first step in Handicare’s own online troubleshooter.
2. Charge point
Is the chair parked fully on its charge point? Continuous beeping usually means it is off charge, the charge point has failed or the batteries are dying, according to stairliftcosts.co.uk.
3. Seat
Check the seat is swivelled back and locked into its travel position.
4. Footrest and safety edges
Look for anything touching or blocking them: a slipper, a bag, a loose stair carpet.
5. Remote and call-station batteries
If the remote does nothing, try the controls on the chair arm itself. Remote batteries run down.
6. Anything else
Stop there. Do not open covers or touch the rail. Send us the details and we will pass them to an engineer.

Which Handicare stairlift model do you have?
The model helps the engineer bring the right parts. All details below are from Handicare’s straight and curved range pages.
Current straight lifts
The 1000, the K2 and the 1100, for which Handicare claims the slimmest rail on the market. Handicare calls the 1000 its “most established straight stairlift”, for users up to 200 kg with two park points.
Curved lifts
Single-rail (the Freecurve) and twin-rail. Both are made to measure for one staircase, so parts for the rail are specific to your stairs.
Discontinued models
The 950 and 950+ (straight) and the 2000 and 2000 Outdoor (curved). Handicare no longer supplies them but says it still services them and supplies parts.
Other names on your paperwork
Older lifts and invoices may say Minivator or Companion rather than Handicare. It is the same lift family. If you are unsure, check the manual or the label on the lift, or ask the engineer.

The thing to ask for, from anyone, is a price agreed before the engineer travels. If a call-out charge is vague on the phone, it will not be clearer on the invoice.
How much does a new Handicare stairlift cost?
Handicare publishes no price against a model name, according to stairliftcosts.co.uk, so prices come from dealers. The dealer prices it tracked in September 2026 were about £1,495 to £2,495 for a straight lift depending on options, according to stairliftcosts.co.uk, and about £3,995 to £5,295 for a Freecurve curved lift, according to the same dealer survey. Repair, service or sell your Handicare?
If a quote lands around £300 to £700 on an older lift
It is worth comparing that figure with what a working straight lift fetches second-hand, and with the price of a reconditioned one, before you say yes. Our page on selling a stairlift gives the buy-back ranges. Curved rails are made for one staircase and rarely resell, so the sums work differently there.
Do Handicare buy back stairlifts?
Handicare offers a removal service for some of its models under six years old. Its page does not say it pays for them. For how removal works on any make, see stairlift removal.
Who makes Handicare stairlifts now?
Why your paperwork might carry a different name.
1970s: Minivator
The first Minivator stairlift was developed in the UK, according to Handicare’s history page.
2010: Handicare
Handicare took over the Minivator Group, including Companion Stairlifts, according to Handicare’s history page.
2021: Savaria
Savaria completed its acquisition of Handicare Group on 4 March 2021.
2026: Savaria Lifts (UK) Ltd
The UK company (no. 04109393, Kingswinford, West Midlands) was renamed from Handicare Accessibility Limited on 19 January 2026, per Companies House. Handicare has said the move to the Savaria brand is gradual and customers “will continue to receive Handicare stairlifts”.

Handicare stairlift questions
How often should a Handicare stairlift be serviced?
Handicare recommends servicing at least once a year, and possibly more if the lift is used often and by more than one person. Partners may ask for regular services before offering extended cover.
Can an independent engineer service my Handicare stairlift?
Once the warranty has ended, the choice is yours. Handicare’s terms say only Handicare-certified dealers should work on the lift, and that non-original parts make the warranty and CE mark invalid, so ask any engineer whether they are Handicare-certified and will fit original parts. While the lift is still under warranty, use Handicare or the dealer that fitted it.
Will Handicare still service my old 950 or 2000?
Handicare says it no longer supplies the 950, 950+, 2000 and 2000 Outdoor, but still provides servicing, parts and maintenance for them. You can also send us the model and we will pass your enquiry to an independent engineer.
Is Handicare the same as Minivator or Companion?
They are the same lift family. Handicare took over the Minivator Group, including Companion Stairlifts, in 2010, according to Handicare, so manuals and service stickers may carry any of these names.
Do Handicare buy back stairlifts?
